How we got here, Part 6

 Wow, it's been a while, and SpringDink 2026 is about to happen (April 18th @ MPS).

 

After the Spring Dink 2025 we continue to play at MPS, and ESC, though ESC only lets us play in term time, so over Summer relocated to Redhill Tennis Club for Thursday nights.

Brand new courts at RTC make playing there a pleasure, though the wind makes the game a different beast - I think different paddles are needed for indoors and outdoors...

 I keep designing and procuring paddles with Gen 4 being launched in Summer last year - I'm about to launch Gen 5 paddles later in April 2026. Not selling many, but not advertising much, so only selling to Redhill Pickleball Players, and 1 out of 2 paddles bought sell...

 Summer Slam at Redhill Tennis club was a great success - bringing ~ £500 to the club, with around 100 players, competing for Singles and Doubles titles across multiple skill levels. Though nobody bought any food from the on-site barbecue...

 Unfortunately RTC have replaced their hard courts with artificial clay, so the Summer Slam this year will have to move somewhere else - Merstham Park School is the venue, August is the time (so watch out for entries going fully live shortly).


Meantime I've been running a Winter League for both Singles and Doubles at the club with finals day coming up on April 25th... 

My DUPR has settled down around 3.6 - with room to improve, and regular players with Redhill Pickleball is around 40 players. Redhill Tennis Club's target of 50 pickleballers has been met with currently 55 pickleball ONLY players members at the club. 

Next thing is lights on the pickleball courts and Club Chamionships at Redhill Tennis Club.

 Also started to procure t-shirts and other printed material for other clubs in the area (Croydon is first) with t-shirts and court barriers.

AND running pickleball at work's Sports evening this week (2nd time, going from 1 to 3 courts!!).

 So, the tournament went well. Onwards and upwards, planning the next one. Just 2 (and a bit) months after the first.  Lessons learnt.  Hours spent pouring over a spreadsheet trying to get the algorithm right to generate a fair set of 2nd round matches, with no glitches...   Meantime someone develops a tool to do this:  https://picklegames.netlify.app/  BUT it doesn't do mixed matchups!!!  So still had to manually get the match ups working - and it still required a bit of a tweak on the day. As did the scoring mechanism (for some reason the correct results didn't transfer from one set of cells to another despite it working seamlessly in testing (reminder to self - get this sorted for the Summer Slam this week!!) - thanks Danielle for helping me sort this out!). PPL - a bit of a shock to the system...

  So... I went along to the Franklin Premier Pickelball League draft/try out and pickleball festival yesterday... Got a bit of a shock with most players there were 4.2+ and playing how we generally play just didn't cut it!  The techniques I've been taught to coach - up to 3.5 level - just don't work A Long-Dink, for instance, as third shot, just gets pummeled as the players whip the ball adding top spin from balls beneath the level of the net... And anything slightly high turns into a volley-battle... Lots still to learn... It was great fun though - I learnt a lot through losing.. And hope to be back next year, to see how much I've improved (IF my legs can cope).. 8 hours of pretty non-stop play has left me hobbling a little today - by the 17:00 I was struggling to waddle up to the NVZ...   A number of players were using the REAL Ben John's Perseus IV -  to which my 'knock-off' got compared favourably! OFF TOPIC: Polestars 2 and 4

Some of you will know that I took the plunge into Electric Cars a couple of years back, leasing a black Polestar 2. Shadowfax     I've taken this to and from the continent, and the only time I've had problems charging it was in Oxford finding a working fast charger.   It is a great car... But the other week it died (RIP Shadowfax), or rather the 12 v battery, that runs the onboard systems, as well as the TPAM battery both died. These don't get charged by the charging infrastructure, but are charged when driving - I'm not sure how they got discharged as I'd driven to and from Oxford the previous day, and had 39% charge on the drive battery. The next day I tried to unlock it but.... dead as a doornail, it was emulating a Norwegien Blue - pushing up the daisies, it was an ex-polestar.... Recovery person came out and  'jump started' it but told me it was likely to happen again within a week, and I should get it to the garage, via the Polestar recorery, ASAP. The...
